Before you clean your Oriental rugs, be sure to know the answers to these 4 questions:

This beautiful oriental rug photo taken by Peter from Saudi Arabia and licensed under CC by 2.0. See more of Peter's photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedronet/

1. If your Oriental rug is made of cotton, is the cotton is mercerized or non-mercerized?

Most oriental rugs are silk or wool, but there are some made of cotton. The kind makes a big difference. Mercerized cotton has been treated with heat to make it fade resistant. Mercerized cotton rugs are also resistant to shrinkage and generally easier to clean. Mercerized cotton looks shinier and smoother than non-mercerized cotton. Great care must be taken to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning rugs made of non-mercerized cotton.

2. What does the manufacturer of your Oriental rug recommend?

Steam cleaning your Oriental rugs may be fine, but you should make sure by checking what the manufacturer of your Oriental rug recommends. The money saved doing your own Oriental rug cleaning is no bargain if you end up with a rug that needs to be repaired or is ruined by improper cleaning.

This image of fine oriental carpet taken by Svadilfari and licened under CC ND by 2.0. See more of Sean's photos on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/22280677@N07/

Many newer oriental rugs are already treated with a chemical to prevent stains when you buy them. However, treating your oriental rug with a carpet protector like Scotchgard™ will give it additional resistance to stains.

3. Are you comfortable cleaning your Oriental rug yourself?

You should only clean an Oriental rug if you know the material that it is made of and are certain of the correct process to clean it. Some of these rugs are made of silk; others are natural wool or cotton. Some of these rugs are machine-dyed and some are hand-dyed. Cleaning a hand-dyed silk rug improperly can easily ruin it.

4. If you decide to use a commercial rug cleaning company to clean your oriental rugs, what should you look for?

Look for an established cleaning company with technicians that are IIRC certified. Carpet cleaning techs who have this certification know how to clean different kinds of Oriental carpets.

At National Clean, we have been cleaning carpets for decades and every one of our techs holds this certification. Trust your valuable Oriental rugs to certified cleaning professionals who have been in the business for many years.

Ask your National Clean tech to show you his certification. He’ll be glad to do it.

Call National Cleaning Specialist at 813-435-1331 for Oriental rug cleaning in New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Lutz, or throughout the Tampa Bay Area.

Before you hire a carpet cleaning company in Brandon, Florida, or anywhere else in Hillsborough County, you should understand the different kinds of cleaning processes that commercial carpet cleaners use.

The more you know, the better decision you can make when you choose a carpet cleaning company in Brandon, Lutz or Wesley Chapel, Florida.

There are four basic cleaning processes that carpet cleaning companies use:

Dry chemical carpet cleaning – The carpet cleaning tech sets a pad on your carpet and using spins the pad with a machine. When the pad has absorbed as much dirt from the carpet as possible, another pad is applied to the carpets. Using a dry chemical process is like trying to wipe dirt out of your carpet with a giant towel. It’s not the process that most carpet manufacturers recommend to clean your home’s carpets.

Dry foam carpet cleaning – Carpet cleaning companies that use this method put a cleaning chemical on your carpets and allow it to dry. The theory is that dirt sticks to the wet chemical. First of all, the process can leave a residue on your home’s carpet. Second, it does not work as well as other methods. Would you put shampoo in your hair, let it dry, and then vacuum out the dirt? Cleaning processes that use rinsing and extraction work the best on carpet.

Dry compound carpet cleaning method – Companies that use this method sprinkle a carpet cleaning compound on your carpets and then brush it in with a machine. The mixture is supposed to attract dirt before it is vacuumed out of the carpet.

Hot water extraction carpet cleaning – Hot water extraction is the method that most carpet manufacturers recommend because it works the best. We pre-treat the carpet with a cleaner and then rinse with hot water that is forced deep into the carpet and sucked out using very high pressure. The heat and pressure generated by truck-mounted commercial equipment is much better than that generated by the DIY hot water extraction carpet cleaning machines rented at home improvement stores. Hot water extraction works so well because the water suspends dirt in solution and high pressure suction removes it leaving clean, fresh-smelling carpets.

Remember that carpet makers require professional cleaning of your home’s carpets every 12-18 months to maintain the warranty. At National Floor Care Specialists, our hot water extraction carpet cleaning will keep your warranty in force.

I recently spoke to one of my Brandon carpet cleaning clients who is the proud parent of a high-energy youngster. She called me in a panic because he had accidentally stained her leather couch with ink from a ballpoint pen.

This image created by Jason and licensed under CC by 2.0.
She wanted to try to remove the stain before having me come out.

If you ever need to remove ink from a leather sofa, time is of the essence. A stain is easier to remove right after it happens because leather is porous.

One of the best ways to remove ink spots from a leather couch is to use undiluted rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Before you apply any cleaning product to a leather couch, try it on a part of the couch that is not visible to make sure that it will not discolor the leather.

When you’re ready to start removing the stain, the steps are simple:

• Moisten the swab with alcohol and lightly rub it over the ink stain to transfer the ink to the swab.

• Repeat until the ink stain is gone.

• Wipe the area with a damp cloth to rinse away any remaining alcohol.

• The alcohol will dry the leather, so you may want to use the leather conditioner recommended by the couch’s maker to restore the leather.

If the ink stain does not come out, call a professional upholstery cleaning company.

National Cleaning Specialists cleans carpets, tile, wood floors, and upholstery throughout Tampa Bay. With more than 20 years experience, our technicians have the spot removal know how to make your leather couch look like new.

Sealer haze: Natural stone and grout surfaces can only hold a certain amount of sealer.

If excess sealer is left on the surface and it dries it could cause a smooth, silky white haze.

Sealer haze on the surface of tile and stone surfaces will wear off during normal foot traffic. Sealer haze on grout lines can be cleaned using a towel soaked with fresh sealer. This will dissolve the excess and can be wiped away.

In extreme conditions using a high ph tile and grout cleaner and a rotary scrubber can speed up the process of removal.

Removing Holloway’s Quick Shine, Orange Glo, or many other wood floor care products can be a very tough, costly and fustrating job if you don’t know what you are doing.

National Cleaning Specialist of Tampa Bay can remove and restore wood floors. For removal of wood floor cleaners and floor finish call 813-435-1331 serving Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Brandon, Valrico, Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Lutz Florida areas.

We recently had a customer hire us to clean and remove the product ” Quick Shine Floor Finish and Orange Glow from her new laminate floors which had caused an uneven and blotchy sheen. We were able to remove the product and clean her laminate floors following these steps

Products needed:

• Spray bottle (optional)

• Scotch-Brite abrasive pad (green scrub pad with yellow sponge-NOT an SOS, Brillo or steel wool pad)

• Soft towels

• New and well rinsed sponge mop OR terrycloth mop

• Rubber/latex gloves and safety goggles (recommended to prevent eye/skin irritation when handling IFT)

Process

It’s best to begin with a test section in an inconspicuous area (i.e. behind a door). We recommend working in

small sections as you complete this process. Complete all steps before moving onto another section of the

floor.

1. Apply a SMALL amount of the IFT solution to a section of the floor. Use a spray bottle to mist the floor

or squirt a small amount and spread it with a soft cloth. Apply only enough cleaner to wet the floor.

2. Use the abrasive pad and scrub the area. This should remove the wax buildup.

3. After scrubbing the area, wipe the section with a water dampened cloth.

4. The final step is to apply Squeaky Cleaner with a microfiber mop. No water rinse is necessary after this

cleaner is applied. Wipe/mop the floor until it is dry – do not leave the floor wet.

If this is successful in removing the contaminant, proceed with the rest of the floor, following all steps. You may

need to repeat steps 1 & 2 more than once.

If you are not successful in removing the contaminant with this process, you need to remove the remaining

product by abrading the floor (screening or sanding). It is recommended to hire a professional flooring

contractor if abrasion techniques are required.
