Does Your Wood Floor Need to be Recoated or Refinished?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

A complete refinishing may be necessary

National Cleaning Specialist of Tampa Bay recommends if areas of your floor have been worn down to the bare wood, if the floor has deep stains or color differences in the wood, if there’s chipping or peeling, or if your floor cannot be re coated due to factors discussed above, you’ll have to do a complete refinish.

If these signs are not readily apparent, you can use this simple test to determine what care your floors need:

Take this simple test

Find a high traffic area where the finish is likely to be the most worn, and pour a tablespoon of water onto the floor.

If the water beads up and you can wipe it without a trace, the finish is still working and you don’t need to do anything just yet.

If the water slowly soaks into the wood floor, creating a moderately darkish spot, the floor is partially worn. You may be able to get away with a recoating. Consult your wood flooring contractor for the best course of action.

If the water immediately disappears into the wood leaving an obvious dark spot, it’s time to refinish the floor.

For routine cleaning of wood floors by sweeping and vacuuming along with use of Squeaky Cleaner will maintain the floor’s original appearance.

Carpet Cleaning Tampa: What are those black lines around my baseboards?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Many customers that I have cleaned, have pointed out that the previous cleaner could not remove those black lines around the baseboards and under closed doors? These black lines are between a quarter of an inch to half inch in width and travel down the length on the wall.

This type of soiling is called Soil filtration. Its the airflow contaminants that are trying to pass through a door or the crack in the wall. This contamination is similar to what you find in your air conditioning filter.

As the air passes through the edge of the carpet pile, the microscopic  soiling is deposited there, (hence the term filtration soiling). This build up occurs over a extended period of time and is not noticed until a build up has occurred.

This type of soiling is very difficult to remove because the soil particles  are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet pile, sometimes into the backing of the carpet.

Removing this type of soiling is very difficult and requires special cleaning agents to assist in the process.

To help prevent soil filtration, vacuum and wipe the edges of the carpet on a regular basis.

Carpet Cleaning: Spotting and Stain Removal

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Does your Cleaning Company remove all of the stains from your carpets?

I ask this question because most cleaners I know do not even have a spotting kit on their truck. Removing stains such as Kool Aid, grease, paint, make up and rust will require specialty spotting to remove these stains.

To remove most stains in carpets the process should consist of these fundamental steps:

  1. Pre Vacuum : This will help remove more of the dry soil and sand from the carpet.
  2. Pre Treat :By pre treating the carpets, this step will help suspend the oily soil that sticks to the carpet fibers so it can be easily removed in the rinse step
  3. Rinse: This will remove the suspended soils and cleaning agents out of the carpet
  4. Spotting: Cleaning Solutions designed for a specific spot or stain
  5. Rinse: To remove cleaning solution
  6. Groom: Creates a neater appearance and faster dry times
  7. Dry: Carpet dryers to help speed the process up. Most carpets dry in 1-3 hours

Tile and Grout Cleaning

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Cleaning tile and grout can be a back breaking job and very time consuming. National Cleaning Specialists recommends a very simple but effective process to clean your floors. Our unique process that we developed and use is described in this article below.

The first step in cleaning a tile floor is to remove the sand and grit. This is best done using a vacuum with Hepa Filtration. Once the grit and sand is removed you then can pre treat the areas with an alkaline pre-spray. This will help break down and suspend the soils for rinsing.

Using an agitation device to scrub the grout lines and tile will achieve better results. Always make sure that you use the hottest water possible when cleaning.

The fourth step is to rinse and extract the soil and cleaning solution from the surface. Using a tool with a vacuum and high pressure to clean the surface will do the best job. You may also use a mop with clean water as well but the results will take longer. Make sure the water is changed regularly.

The final step is to dry the floor. I recommend using a high speed blower to help dry the areas before use.

National Cleaning Specialists cleans Tile Floors for only $29.95 per area up to 100 Sq. Ft.

Carpet Cleaning Tampa: High traffic areas

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

While cleaning carpets today, I had a customer ask me about a high traffic area in front of her sofa.

She had moved her sofa to a different location and there was an area in front of the sofa that appeared worn out. She wanted to know why that area still looked so bad after the cleaning.

I explained that sand and grit had scratched the face of the fiber causing it to be distorted.

If the carpet is fairly new, many customers will think that the carpet has worn out in those areas. Carpet manufacturers disagree with this term. They consider this as ugly out.

This could have been avoided by more frequent vacuuming and cleaning frequency. Proper door mats will also help in removing of the sand and grit that causes this type of condition.

Vacuuming should be done daily in the high traffic areas to prevent this from happening.

Professional Carpet Cleaning using a low moisture hot water extraction process, should be done at least every 12 to 18 months.

Carpet Cleaning: Fundamentals of Cleaning Carpets

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Cleaning carpets in the Tampa Bay area should consist of 4 fundamental processes to achieve the cleanest results

At National Cleaning Specialists we first identify the carpet construction to determine what type of cleaning agents will provide the safest and most effective results. Once this is done, we then pre inspect the carpet areas being cleaned to determine the amount of soiling, stains, and any installation problems prior to cleaning. Choosing the proper stain removal process is key to having success with removing stains.

There are four steps that should be done if you want clean carpets.

1. Dry soil removal: This process is accomplished with using a high powered vacuum and brush system. By doing this first, it will remove more sand and dirt from your carpets. Most non professional carpet cleaners do not vacuum the carpet prior to cleaning. Most experts would agree that the 85% of soil found in carpets is dry soil. This type of soiling is insoluble, which means it can not be broken down with use of water base cleaning agents or solvents. The most effective way is to vacuum the carpets prior to cleaning.
2. Soil Suspension: An example of this is the wash cycle in your washing machine. This is accomplished by using an alkaline pre conditioner to treat the areas prior to cleaning. This helps in suspending the oily residues for removal. ?
3. Ph balancing rinse: With the use of special cleaning agents, this process removes the suspended soils from the carpet and also neutralizes the previous cleaning agents. The carpet is free of any residue and left clean and soft
4. Spotting: If any spots remain professional spotting agents should be used. Some difficult stains such as ink, mustard, and coffee will most likely need specialty spotters to remove.

There are other steps involved in cleaning carpets but these mentioned are the bare minimum in order to achieve Clean Carpets.

National Clean uses a unique 13 Step Cleaning process to achieve Maximum Soil Removal and Maximum Stain Removal.
